A quantitative method for measuring the gastrointestinal absorption of iron.

چکیده
By JOHN D. BONNET, ALBERT B. HAGEDORN AND CHARLES A. OWEN, JR. T HE AVAILABILITY of radioisotopes of iron has made it possible to quantitate the metabolic cycle of iron with respect to the erythrocyte. With previous technics using radioiron, however, the fraction of an oral dose of iron absorbed by normal persons is relatively small-2 to 27 per cent-which limits the interpretation of results in studying the gastrointestinal absorption of iron. Particularly, these technics are inadequate for use in syndromes of decreased iron absorption. It seems that the ideal test for absorption of iron would have normal values approaching 50 per cent of the oral dose, so that both increased and decreased absorption could be quantitated. The currently proposed test was designed to achieve this. Two factors helped to increase normal absorption to the 50 per cent level : limiting the dose of iron to 50 , tg., and accentuating absorption by the addition of ascorbic acid. Because of the sensitivity of the scintillation detector employed, a 1 ftc. dose of Fe59 was found to be an adequate tag. The method, as outlined herein, is simple, relatively short, and conveniently

Development of a Method for measuring Reactive Oxygen Radicals Levels In Vitro and Study the Effects of Vitamin C and E on Radical Production Reaction
Background: Free radicals and reactive oxygen species(ROS) are the most important factors in formation of oxidative stress reaction. Now, radical damage has been suggested to contribute to a wide variety of diseases such as Alzheimer, atherosclerosis and cancer. Transition metal ions in the presence of the various biomolecules produce these active compounds. The aim of this study is introducing...
متن کاملQuantitative measuring of pearlite in carbon steels using electromagnetic sensor
Non-destructive Eddy current (EC) technique has long been used to detect discontinuities in materials. Recently, its application has been extended to characterize materials microstructure. In order to identify different microstructures, four plain carbon steel bars with different chemical compositions (AISI 1015, 1035, 1045 and 1080) were used in annealed condition. The pearlite percentage, car...
متن کاملMeasuring the Density of Calcium and Magnesium Elements in Pistachio Leaf by ICP Modern Method and Comparing it With Titration Methods and Atomic Absorption
Introduction: Calcium critical limit in pistachio plants is about 1.3 percent of plant dried material; magnesium critical limit in pistachio leaves is about 0.6 percent of plant dried material. To measure calcium and magnesium there are several methods in which three methods of titration and atomic absorption that are more common and used to libraries more in addition to ICP modern method are u...
متن کاملSelective Speciation of Ferric Iron by a New Heterocyclic Ligand
The synthesis and analytical applications of the new heterocyclic ligand are described. The complexation reaction of the ligand with some cations was studied in aqueous methanol at room temperature using the spectrophotometric method. Results revealed that only the absorption spectra of the Fe (III)–ligand complex show a high redshift of the absorption maximum in the aqueous methanol soluti...
متن کاملReduction of iron in the human stomach.
It has been shown that the oral administration of ferrous compounds, as compared with ferric salts of iron, resulted in somewhat more rapid absorption of iron from the gastrointestinal tract (results of studieswith radioactive isotopes (l)), and more rapid hemoglobin formation in anemia due to iron deficiency (2). From these results and from the fact that ferrous compounds in general are much m...
